Pesticide Applicator Training
Before you proceed, find out if you are a Private or Commercial Applicator.
You are a Private Applicator if…
You use a pesticide to produce an agricultural commodity AND you apply those pesticides on land you or your employer owns or controls.
If BOTH of these are true, you are a private applicator.
You are a Commercial Applicator if…
You don’t fit the definition of Private Applicator.
As a commercial applicator, you may need to be certified AND licensed in some cases. This depends on if you are a commercial applicator for-hire or not and if you use RUPs or not.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I schedule an in-person exam?
To schedule your in-person exam, schedule an appointment through the Extension Brown County Support Staff at 920-391-4610. You will be given 2 hours to complete your exam, which consists of approximately 70 multiple-choice questions. The exam is open book, and you are permitted to use a non-graphic calculator (we have some at the Extension office that you may use).
What should I bring to my in-person exam?
Things to bring to the exam:
- Photo ID: The exam proctor will not issue you an exam without a positive ID or a notarized waiver for why you do not have a photo ID.
- Social Security Number: Federal and State law require this number from anyone who is seeking a state certification or license. You don’t need your SS card, just your number.
- Your Training Registration Form: Provide either the training registration certificate from the manual or if you ordered a PDF or online course E-Ticket. Proctor will need that PAT number on either of those two items. DATCP cannot grade your exam, nor grant you certification until the form is collected.
- Calculator: You may use a calculator for the exam. However, cell phone calculators, programmable calculators, or those with alphabet keypads are not permitted. Do not bring a calculator that must be connected to AC power. DATCP test proctors will usually have a few calculators for people to borrow.
- Private applicators, if you took the online course or Zoom training, you will have to show the proctor your completion email (printed out or on your phone) to be coded as taken a training.
Cell phones are not allowed in the testing room and must be left outside the room.
When will I receive my results?
You can expect your exam results in 2-3 weeks. You can call or email DATCP with specific certifications questions. If you do not receive your certification card within 30 days, you can also reach out to DATCP.
Note that you will most likely have to leave a message if you call: datcppesticideinfo@wi.gov or 608-224-4548
